Seasonal Rounds

This is my Kindergarten Specialist Course culminating activity

Rationale:

By learning and participating in traditional practices of our Tsleil-Waututh, Squamish and Musqueam neighbours we can deepen our understanding and connections with ourselves, our community and our environment.  This understanding supports the development of a global perspective as students gain capacity for perspective taking, ecological awareness and respect for diversity.

Objectives: (students will...)

  • Identify and discuss local seasonal rounds
  • Observe and interpret seasonal changes
  • Engage in problem-solving experiences that are connected to place, story, cultural practices, and perspectives relevant to local First Peoples communities, the local community, and other cultures.

  • Deepen their sense of self and relationships within the community

All About Me

A brief outline for a unit on self-identity using story books

Rationale:

In Kindergarten, it is important for students to begin to develop their personal identities. A good way to do this is to create opportunities for them to explore diversity, their own families and learn new language/vocabulary to be able to express themselves and their ideas. The picture books listed below are an ideal means to introduce these ideas. Providing provocations, support and time to play allows children to further explore and understand these ideas.

Objectives: (students will...)

  • Stories and traditions about ourselves and our families reflect who we are and where we are from
  • Stories and other texts help us learn about ourselves and our families
  • Everyone has a unique story to share
